Pest-Free Summer Parties
We have an ongoing debate at my house about whether to eat out meals indoors or out. On the one hand I love sitting outside after a long day of sitting in an air conditioned office, but I hate the constantly having to shoo away the flies from our food. Fortunately the people at Terminix gave me a few tips for keeping the pests away this summer.
-
Ants
- Immediately clean drink and food spills.
- Take dirty plates and utensils indoors after eating.
- Sweep entertainment areas after meals to eliminate remaining food particles.
- Keep fruits covered at all times.
- Serve juices in pitchers with sealed lids.
- Throw away all trash in lid-sealed containers.
- Use fans to create a light breeze across a table.
- Serve food in containers with removable lids.
- Locate trash receptacles as far from you and your guests as possible.
- Empty birdbaths, kid’s pools and any other containers of standing water at least once a week to eliminate breeding grounds in your own backyard.
- Keep gutters clean so water does not accumulate. Any water that stands for 7 days or longer can breed mosquitoes.
- Remove scented candles from the entertainment area. These might attract flying insects that mistake the scent for fruit or flowers.
- Many flying insects are attracted to light. To maintain the mood you want while keeping pests as far away as possible, consider lighting the eating, cooking and social areas from a distance.
