The 2009 Color of the Year
The unanimously elected paint color of 2009 is (drum roll, please)... Yellow! Experts across the board—from interior designers to paint supply giants—all agree that the warm freshness of yellow is just what our walls need this year. Inspired by your favorite cheery brunch cocktail, Pantone named Mimosa its color of the year. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, expects that this nurturing, reassuring color will appear in both interior and fashion accessories to spark innovation and inspire optimism during a new time of political and social beginnings.
Doty Horn, director of color for Benjamin Moore, suggests St. Elmo's Fire, a color she says plays nicely with neutrals to energize any living space. Use the color sparingly, such as in hallways, stairwells and connector spaces as a transitional color, or on one wall in a room to make a bold statement on a budget. Changing wall color can feel like a scary commitment, but you can still enjoy the trend when you incorporate the cheer into your decor. We love these home accents saturated with the happy hue.
Happy painting, Rachel

Yellow is cheerful, but it also easy to get tired of it right away. It is not very versatile. Plus, it has been long revered for making babies cry/act irritable. It's great as an accent, but I wouldn't recommend it as the main color for a room.
yellow is definitely a an accent color. a little goes a long way.
Yellow can be a bit bolder in Palm Beach or LA but if you live in the midwest I'd keep it to a pale yellow and maybe only sitting rooms, laundry or in a bath where tile covers more of the wall than paint will. Enjoy the sunshine.
Yuk! I'll be skipping this one.
I am happy about this. My bedroom is a pale, soft yellow with lavender and pale green accents. Not a floral though! Just soft and modern....
Just wait though....seems like all the colors make their rounds. Next season will be another "new" color.
I think a soft yellow can be refreshing, clean and versatile but the concentrated yellow favored by the decorator cognoscenti this year is just too intense for the average home. I think pops of this color can add a zing but if you use it as a wall color instead of as an accent, the risk is that it will visually tire the viewer and become overwhelming. That said, I'm sure there are some trendsetters who will make this color work, even on a large scale, and prove me wrong but even those who do risk it and find it didn't quite work can take comfort in the fact that next January there will be a new "color of the year" and besides, paint is cheap!
I painted my home office yellow last year (w/white trim)--I'm still loving it--it's so cheerful!
I was on a yellow kick for about 3 days. I had painted my bedroom a few years back and would lay awake at night because of the brightness. I immediately painted over it as I would only recommend that color for maybe a bathroom, kitchen or dining room.
My kitchen has been Lemon Curd yellow for several years, and I live in the heart of the midwest (Indiana) and I love my yellow kitchen, and it didn't make any of my 6 grandchildren fussy of cry!
maybe a pale or shimmery shade of yellow but that pic looks like some one moved into a lemon pie! So 70's !!! Not in my home!
Well, I do not know about the rest of the world... but I recently moved to a smaller size home and painted yellow through out... and depending on the light, time of day. this colour can go from yellow to pale green... I did it with white trim and aqua accents... To be perfectly honest I would not change it for anyone...
However, would like to comment that so many come in and say I would not have thought of painting a room this colour but wow how relaxing.... and they like myself love the comfort of the colour yellow.... it is a cottage like colour brought home... Wishing all those that do try this colour or a yellow ... watch and see that it will become your favourite in no time at all.
We painted our living room and den four years ago with a softer pale tint of yellow, and I adore it's versatility, and it's sunny disposition
You could change anything in the room, whatever the choice, because the softer tint of yellow is such a neutral backdrop. Our hardwood floors have a yellow tint to them as well....so the rooms are surrounded in happiness all year long.
You should try it...you'll be amazed.
Yellow is a cheerful color. true, it can get 'old'. How about accents and curtains and tablecloths, etc in yellow and a more neutral color for walls. For me, its easier to sew a new tablecloth or curtains, than repaint walls before they need painting. The new odorless paints are great. I love a yellow kitchen in the morning, but mine is visible from other areas of the house and not a good choice. And material can be bought for $1 t0 $2 a yard if you watch for sales or the bargain table at your local "W".
In my younger days, yellow was not considered a colour to use in homes.
It was always shades of blue and green and the pastels avoiding yellow.
But nowadays colours are used to each individual tastes and this has resulted in bright cherry homes, offices, and colourful stores that invite anyone and offer soothing comfort after a hard days work.
In my younger days yellow was not a color to use in homes. It was always shades of blue and green in pastel tones, avoiding yellow ofcourse.
But now one sees yellow and other colours, purple, fuschia, even red being used widely in cheery homes, offices, and vividly bright colored stores inviting people.
Colors tend to liven and at the same time comfort one after a hard days work.
Using ones imagination can often yield in some striking combinations that are always remembered.
I did Garbanzo bean yellow, which is a strong, rich, but subtle yellow and everyone who enters our living room LOVES IT! I absolutely recommend it.
I love a very soft, pastel yellow, on walls and myself!!! esp with lavender and green looks like spring garden, i live in the north where it get darks early at nite and early morning this is definately a pick me up smile color!!! i Like it with red and orange, too!!
I painted my windowless bathroom a very bright yellow with white wainscotting several years ago. People that come in think it's just been updated! It always feels fresh, bright, & clean. However, I don't think I'd use this colour in another room in my home.

Yuk!
I used a bright yellow in my hall closet and my pantry. Neither one has windows so when I open them everything is brighter. I also used a milder yellow in my laundry room with a cute washline border. Yellow would be too bright for a room color.
I had painted our main bathroon a bright yellow a few years ago at the request of my boyfriend (his favorite color). My coworkers started making comments on my makeup. The bright yellow with the light in the bathroom made my makup seem ok, but getting into the light at work.....well it wasn't ok. I tried to dull the color down with muted greens & orange in rugs/shower curtain etc. I repainted the room a couple months ago. It's now a golden cocoa color with the muted greens. I told my boyfriend he could paint his bathroom yellow if he wanted.....not mine ever again.
Yellow is an color associate with making people feel anxious. It is a color I would not choose as a dominant one for any room.
My bedroom and bath are both in yellow tones, however not a bright yellow like you are showing. It is more of a goldish tint which really tones it down. It goes with everything. I have many comforters and most of them have gold tones in them and they all just seem to go great with this color. I think the sunny bright yellow would be too much for me, but I am in love with the much more "mellow yellow" of my master bed/bath.
Hmmm. Anyone for yellow snow too?
Yellow is the color of energy and youth be very mindful of the shade...very bright yellows should never go in the bedroom or you will be up all night...this color works best in a room with little sunlight and definately should be pared with earthtones blues or browns to bring it down a notch.
I painted my breakfast room yellow a few years ago. It is more of a golden yellow than that in the picture. The room has little sunlight so it works very well to brighten it up. Depending on the time of day, the hue takes on a different tone which keeps it interesting. We have paired it with browns and deep orange and with the greens of the trees outside the windows, we love it.
I used a Better Homes & Gardens color Meadow Hue in my sun room. It is a pale soft version of yellow and even on a dreary day makes the room sunny. I used aquas and blues with touches of raspberry in the fabrics. Love it!!!
